Changes: Body image and the media
The ad above from the 1930s Great Depression shows how the body ideal has changed over time. Now, the woman on the left looks like the typical fashion model and gaining weight is almost never encouraged. How would it affect girls and women if they saw more images of beauty that looked like the woman on the right?
Media’s effects on teen girls’ body image & self-esteem
The powerful video is the work of a 10th grade student:
What Happens To 3 Out Of 4 Girls After Leafing Through A Fashion Mag For 3 Minutes?
The answer is at 0:36
Perception of her physical appearance is the number one factor in predicting a girl’s self-esteem. In Girls Circle, Body Image is the focus and girls are given the opportunity to speak freely about their interests and concerns in a safe space and express themselves creatively with fun activities. Girls who have completed Girls Circles have improved body image and self-confidence, choose friends who treat them the way they want to be treated, are better able to express their needs to adults, feel closer attachment to school, and behave in ways that are true to their values.

Girls Circle Summer Workshop
I’m hosting a Girls Circle workshop this summer for girls ages 11-14. Body Image is the focus of our Girls Circle because perception of one’s physical appearance has been consistently recognized to be the number one factor in predicting self-esteem. Girls are given the opportunity to speak freely about their interests and concerns in a safe space and express themselves creatively with fun activities. Girls Circles have been proven to increase body image and self-esteem, improve friendships and authenticity, and long-term benefits include decreases in alchohol use and self-harming behaviours.
